Chapter Nine

Ava filled her glass with ice water and slipped onto the kitchen chair. She felt odd working in Quinn’s home with him in Grand Rapids, but he’d been comfortable with it, so she accepted his offer. Besides the key, he’d given her and Brandon a generous check for their work. Though happy for Brandon, she winced taking the money. She’d received more joy from having the opportunity to explore his gorgeous home and gardens, and her contribution to his decor had been pure pleasure.

Brandon had tried to convince her to let him finish the planting, but she’d watered the flowers, still in pots, and insisted he follow the doctor’s orders and rest. The school had cooperated with his need to stay home for a few days, and he’d been allowed to alter his final class projects. Even a couple of his teachers had dropped by the office to let her know how happy they were it was only mono and not a relapse of his Hodgkin’s lymphoma. She’d been grateful for everyone’s concern.

Able to relax now that she knew what ailed Brandon, Ava had delved into her work. She set out items for Quinn to approve, many lovely pieces to add to the decor and a couple of things she worried Quinn might not appreciate. He’d made it clear that his past life was private, but she believed strongly that he needed to accept it so that he could move on. She’d taken some of the photos from the album to use in the decor, but when she thought about the possible repercussions, she closed her eyes and prayed.

Anxious for Quinn to see what she’d done, Ava wandered into the living room, admiring the additions. The pillows were perfect and the splash of antique gold and citron added a color contrast to the forest-green and white walls. She’d found an oil painting of an old house, the roof touched by the gold of a sunset, surrounded by a field of yellow daisies. She’d hung the artwork over the fireplace mantel, the perfect location for a Belleck vase in a sandwave pattern and a fluted saffron-hued vase with a white Byzantine design. Striking.

She took a sip of the water she carried as she ambled through the archway and stood in his office doorway. With only one window, she’d had the room painted in a rich cream to enhance the light with one wall in saddle-brown for a splash of color. The room needed her handiwork, but she wanted Quinn’s input. She had added one item to his credenza, the crystal sphere seated on the hand-carved birch pedestal.

She set her water on the edge of the desk and crossed the room to adjust the crystal. When she did, a prism of light fell across the beige carpet in a rainbow of color. God’s rainbow. Her heart lifted. She backed toward the desk and reached for her glass of water. Instead, she struck the side, and the water sloshed onto the desk.
